The 48th session of the Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review (UPR)

According to the Public Relations Office of the Vice Presidency for Women and Family Affairs, Mrs. Fatemi, International Affairs Advisor of this Vice Presidency, delivered a speech at the 48th session of the Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in Geneva and highlighted the Islamic Republic of Iran&#rsquo;s achievements regarding women's affairs.

She stressed that women, as half of the human capital of society, play a key role in sustainable development and stated that: “Iranian women have been able to achieve growth and prosperity despite inhumane and unjust coercive measures through the support of policies and legal frameworks.

 

Mrs. Fatemi noted the progress made in women's education in Iran and referred to "Reducing the gender gap in education to 3%, increasing the share of women in the student population to over 52%, and the growing presence of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields are among Iran's most important achievements."

She also talked about the improvement in women's health indicators: "The life expectancy of Iranian women has increased to 78 years, and the maternal mortality rate has decreased to 20 cases per 100,000 births. Besides, insurance services for pregnancy and infant health are broadly provided."

In the area of employment, Fatemi emphasized "41% of created jobs, 30% of business licenses, and 80% of home-based business licenses have been allocated to women. In addition, over 4,000 out of 10,000 knowledge-based companies in Iran are run by women.

She also highlighted the increasing presence of women in managerial positions "The appointment of women to managerial positions has increased from 19,000 in 2020 to over 40,000 in 2023. The appointment of women as ministers, vice presidents, government spokespersons, and other key positions has also reached more than 70.

In conclusion, the International Affairs Adviser to the Vice President for Women and Family Affairs stated: "Iran's achievements show a systematic and constant effort to create equal opportunities for women in line with sustainable development. However, it is important to take the social and cultural context of each country in the discourse on women's rights into account and to respect the cultural diversity of each nation.
