The Global Leaders' Meeting on Women

The Global Leaders' Meeting on Women took place in Beijing on October 13 and 14, 2025. Supported by UN Women, the event brought together leaders from more than 110 countries to discuss the theme, "One Shared Future: New and Accelerated Process for Women's All-Round Development." Mrs. Zahra Behrouz Azar, Vice President for Women and Family Affairs, led our country's delegation at the meeting. She attended at the official invitation of Ms. Shen Yiqin, President of the All-China Women's Federation, and delivered a speech.

 

During the summit, leaders and experts from various countries discussed global challenges such as climate change, technological advances, and conflict-related crises. They also reviewed progress since the 1995 Beijing World Conference on Women and encouraged a united approach for the future of women's communities.

Upon arriving in China, the Vice President for Women and Family Affairs spoke with the IRIB News Agency about the goals of her trip. She emphasized the achievements of Iranian women in various fields and said that sharing these successes internationally is a key mission of her office.

As the meeting commenced, Chinese President Xi Jinping, along with his wife, attended the opening ceremony of the Global Leaders' Meeting on Women and gave a keynote speech at the China National Convention Center in Beijing.

Other speakers at the opening ceremony included the Presidents of Iceland, Dominica, and Ghana; the Prime Ministers of Mozambique and Sri Lanka; the United Nations Secretary-General; the UN Deputy Secretary-General; and the Executive Director of UN Women.

Following the opening, the plenary meeting was held, during which leaders and representatives from 46 countries and international organizations shared their ideas and points of view. They called the event a new milestone in the history of the international women's movement and pledged to take concrete actions to accelerate women's all-around development.

Mrs. Behrouz Azar presented the proposal for the "Global Women's Covenant of Mercy" in this meeting. She shared the views of the Islamic Republic of Iran and highlighted the importance of mercy, dignity, and wisdom as solutions to global issues like violence and distrust. She also believed that a feminine perspective is essential for making development processes more humane and promoting sustainability worldwide.

The Vice President spoke about the strength and resilience of Iranian women during challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, sanctions, and the 12-day war. She explained that Iran's proposal aims to create a covenant to promote kindness in politics, the economy, and science. She also shared statistics and achievements from Iran in areas such as the economy, health, sports, and governance.

The Global Leaders' Meeting on Women ended in Beijing on Monday afternoon, October 13, 2025. Shen Yiqin, Chinese State Councilor and President of the All-China Women's Federation, and Sima Bahous, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women, attended the closing and gave speeches.

At the end of the meeting, the chair released a statement stressing the importance of a peaceful and safe environment for women. It called for women's full and equal participation in peace processes and recognized their key role in sustainable development. The statement also urged an end to all forms of discrimination and violence against women and girls, with special attention to those in vulnerable situations.

 

On the sidelines of the meeting, the Vice President for Women and Family Affairs met with counterparts from other countries, including Ms. Shen Yiqin, President of the All-China Women's Federation, her deputy, and Ms. Zulaykho Makhkamova, Deputy Prime Minister of Uzbekistan. They discussed shared issues and ways to expand cooperation.

During these meetings, participants discussed key topics like reporting on achievements in women's empowerment and improving women's status. They explored cooperation in cultural, economic, and social fields, including skills training, employment, entrepreneurship, and promoting handicrafts. They also looked at ways to help women entrepreneurs and expand international markets for cultural products.

Mrs. Behrouz Azar also met with Ms. Sima Bahous, Executive Director of UN Women, to discuss Iran's membership and voting rights in the UN Commission on the Status of Women. The Iranian representative highlighted the country's strong record on women's issues and called for Iran's legal rights to be restored in this international body.
